Chelerythrine Ameliorates Acetic Acid-Induced Ulcerative Colitis via Suppression of Inflammation and Oxidation

Abstract: The incidence of ulcerative colitis (UC), an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), is drastically increasing globally, leading to greater economic hardship and patient morbidity. This study evaluated the effects of chelerythrine on acetic acid (AA)-induced UC in a mouse model. Mice received chelerythrine (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg, i.g.) and sulfasalazine (SASP) (500 mg/kg, i.g.) for 7 consecutive days following the induction of colitis via the intrarectal administration of AA (5% v/v). Disease activity index (DAI), t… Show more

“…Leonurine, derived from the Lamiaceae family, exhibits cardioprotective effects by decreasing LDH activity and exerting anti-oxidative activity ( Liu et al, 2010 ). Additionally, rutaecarpine, chelerythrine, and matrine have been shown to inhibit LDH levels ( Bao et al, 2011 ; Chen and Huang, 2012 ; Wu et al, 2022 ). Of these, rutaecarpine confers protection against myocardial cell injury by inhibiting the NADPH oxidase–ROS pathway ( Tian et al, 2019 ).…”

“…In the context of this scenario, inflammation and oxidative stress are claimed to sketch UC ( Bastaki et al, 2022 ). These underlying mechanisms result in pathological features of UC including macroscopic damage such as swelling, edema, erosion, and bleeding and microscopic alterations such as cellular infiltration, and necrosis of the colon ultimately resulting in the clinical course of the disease ( Wu et al, 2022 ). Clinically, this disease is presented by abdominal pain, diarrhea, melena, weight loss and in complicated cases it can take transformation into carcinoma of colon ( Elbastawisy et al, 2022 ).…”
