Chelating resin: Pyridine derivatives attached to poly(styrene) beads with spacer group

Abstract: synopsisThe pyridine derivatives were combined to poiy(styrene) beads with spacer groups or a graft chain. These spacer-type and graft-type pyridine beads formed their Cu complexes with high rates and large stability constants; they act as an effective chelating resin. The pyridine residues were more mobile due to the spacer group and the graft chain, compared with the poly(4-vinylpyridine) powder.

“…One year later, Tsuchida and co-workers tried to overcome the reduced activity of the ligands located at the inside of the resins. [181] As shown in Figure 45, they grafted polystyrene beads with soluble oligo-(ethylene oxide) spacers to allow the same degree of solvation of the pyridine ligand as in a homogeneous solution. In this case, the beads were cross-linked with 20 mol % divinylbenzene and the complexation behavior with Cu II ions was studied.…”

“…Grafted poly(ethylene oxide) spacers enhance the solubility of the complexing unit. [181] In their research towards the photochemical behavior of polymers with covalently bound tris(bipyridine)ruthenium complexes, Bourdelande and de March prepared a system with complexes directly anchored to a hydrophobic polystyrene bead. [182] This system was far less efficient than the monomeric [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2 complex with respect to photoinduced electron-transfer from the complex to methyl viologen.…”

“…The fact that metal-containing beads showed a much smoother surface compared to the more wrinkled one of a ligand-functionalized bead has already been reported for a similar system. [19] It must be taken into account, though, that the observed differences could also result from the sputtering of the beads with gold, which is required for conductivity. Nevertheless, the observed features are characteristic for all investigated beads, also regarding the fact that all the samples have been prepared according to the same procedure (spreading on glass plates from a droplet of deionized water and evaporation of the water under vacuum for 20 h).…”
