Checklist of the mites (Arachnida: Acari) associated with bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) in the British Isles

Abstract: The 16 species of bats that occur in the British Isles are all protected under current legislation, and their conservation is the subject of much scientific research and public concern. Of the many arthropod parasites carried by these bats, mites have colonized the greatest range of niches. This paper presents an annotated list of the 64 species of mite taken from British and Irish bats or their roosts to date. Previous published records are collated and in some cases emended, Steatonyssus noctulus, Alabidocar… Show more

“…Specimens of Steatonyssus periblepharus (Kolenati) previously reported in Russia and adjacent countries from P. pipistrellus, other vespertilionid and rhinolophid bats (Stanyukovich 1997) were collected only from P. pipistrellus in Turkey. Baker and Craven (2003) Beck (1971) described maccronyssid mites of the genera Macronyssus, Steatonyssus and Ichoronyssus being found in low numbers on most vespertilionid samples, agreeing with our findings.…”

“…Stanyukovich (1997) and Baker and Craven (2003) indicated that the genera Macronyssus and Steatonyssus were primarily removed from vespertilionid bat species which are common for North Palearctic. We found these genera on the vespertilionid Pipistrellus pipistrellus.…”

“…Some authors do not consider S. andegavinus an independent species, separated from Spinturnix myoti (cf. Baker and Craven 2003). Since S. andegavinus represents the only spinturnicid species infesting Daubenton's bats (Deunff andBeaucournu 1981, Rupp et al 2002), the collection and determination of individual mites was performed only incidentally to ascertain literature data.…”
