Checklist of sea turtles endohelminth in Neotropical region

Abstract: SummaryThis paper presents a list of parasites described in sea turtles from the Neotropical region. Through the review of literature the occurrence of 79 taxa of helminthes parasites were observed, mostly consisting of the Phylum Platyhelminthes with 76 species distributed in 14 families and 2 families of the Phylum Nematoda within 3 species. Regarding the parasite records, the most studied host was the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) followed by the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), olive ridley turtl… Show more

“…Although several checklists concerning the helminths of reptiles, from different parts of the world, have recently been published (e.g. Lunaschi and Drago 2007;Werneck and Da Silva 2016;San-Martin-Ordenes et al 2019), data from Central Europe are still lacking.…”

“…Despite this great diversity, information on its parasite diversity is very scarce considering its importance as biological indicators of disturbed habitat. To date the helminth parasites of reptiles, specially digeneans, have been poorly explored (McAllister et al 2010 (Pronocephalidae), all of which were recovered from aquatic or terrestrial turtles (Tantaleán et al 1992, Tantaleán and Forlong 2013, Fernandes and Kohn 2014, Werneck and Da Silva 2016, Gomez-Puerta et al 2017. Therefore, additional parasitological surveys are needed to comprehend the true digenean richness in reptiles of Peru; this study expands this knowledge adding a new species of Glossidiella infecting the lung of the brown ground snake.…”

“…In the case of the genus Neospirorchis, however, the parasites are quite small and may be associated with small blood vessels, which could hinder their collection (Stacy et al, 2010;. In Brazil, little is known regarding helminth fauna in C. caretta Werneck & Silva, 2016). There are only reports of one aspidgastrid (Lophotaspis vallei), fi ve digeneans (Calycodes anthos, Rhytidodes gelatinosus, Pronocephalus trigonocephalus, Pyelosomum renicapite and Orchidasma amphiorchis) and two nematodes (Sulcascaris sulcata and Kathlania leptura).…”
