“…Fujikawa et al, 1993;Niedbala, 2000), the two similar species Euphthiracarus foveolatus and E. cribrarius have different distributions, with the former being endemic to Japan and the latter being more widespread but not reported from Japan. New collections of E. foveolatus have shown it to be variable in morphology, and this variability overlaps in some ways with that of European populations of E. cribrarius.…”

“…foveolatus, Aoki, 1980;and E. takahasii Aoki, 1980) are currently known from Japan. Euphthiracarus foveolatus was recorded several times from Japan (Fujikawa et al, 1993), but it is a very rare species (Aoki, 2000), and few individuals ware collected at any given time. In the original description (Aoki, 1980), this species was considered to be distinguishable from the Eurasian species E. cribrarius (Berlese, 1904) (not reported from Japan) by two characters: E. foveolatus has "7 pairs of genital setae" and the lengths of aggenital setae ag 1 and ag 2 are equal.…”

“…Subias (2004) assigned 27 species of Hydrozetes distributed around the world. In Japan, two species of Hydrozetes have been reported up to this time (Fujikawa et al, 1993): H. lacustris (Michael, 1882) and H. terrestris Berlese, 1910. In North Japan, a further three species of Hydrozetes have been found in Sphagnum mires and a Japanese horseradish, Wasabia japonica field.…”
