Aim. The aim of this article is to analyse the effectiveness of using the BBC Learning English application for building students’ English-language strategic competence. Methods. The research involved the following methods: survey, pedagogical experiment, expert evaluations. Standard methods of mathematical statistics were used to analyse the obtained results. Results. Research participants who used the application showed significantly better results in improving their speaking skills, expanding their vocabulary, and improving their skills in formulating and expressing their thoughts in English compared to those who did not use the application. The study also showed that using the application promotes active interactive learning and independent learning of the English language, which has a positive effect on student motivation and provides a sustainable positive effect in learning. Conclusions. Using the application improves the level of speaking competence, expands the vocabulary, and develops the ability to formulate and express one’s thoughts in English. Students who used the application regularly achieved better results in learning English compared to those who did not use the application. Prospects. Further research may focus on studying other digital means of foreign language learning.

There is an incessant gap between language acquisition and adoption of modern technologies, especially in semi-urban parts of economically growing countries in Asia. There is a need to establish infrastructure for Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Information Communication Technology (ICT), Virtual Reality (VR), and Augmented Reality (AR) to enrich English Language Teaching. Though these types of establishments instil confidence and fluency among English learners, investment in procurement, running costs towards maintenance and service cost deter institutions from establishing Language Labs and Language studios. The objective of this study was to establish Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) in higher education institutions and enhance English fluency and accuracy with minimal operation and low maintenance cost. The study also methodologically shortlisted open-source mobile applications based on users' feedback on their user-friendliness, skill-levels, content, and options that promote Learners' Autonomy. A quantitative true-experimental study was conducted at the Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, India, to develop the listening skills of (n=121) students of first-year Bachelor of Technology in a varied branch. The pre-test and post-test results revealed improvements in the experimental group. The findings would immensely help the underprivileged to serve ESL learners from any part of the globe who intend to enhance their proficiency in English.

One of the most important aspects of learning a new language is mastering the pronunciation of that language. It is crucial in helping second language learners improve their communication skills and overall performance. Mastering proper pronunciation is a difficult and subtle part of teaching English as a foreign or second language. The focus of this study is to assess the contributing factors affecting ESL students' pronunciation. The study used a quantitative research approach. A total of 189 students from Burayu High School were chosen at random sampling technique for this study. The researchers collected data through a questionnaire. SPSS version 26 was used to analyze the data obtained from the respondents of the survey. Factors influencing pronunciation that were identified in this study include poor motivation, lack of confidence, exposure, practice, interest, an unfriendly atmosphere, one's native language interference, age, personal traits of the learners, instructional approach, and feedback deficiency. The findings also provide valuable insights into preferred pronunciation learning strategies among students of English in the Oromia region of Ethiopia and explore the impact of individual and environmental factors, including first language influence, strengths, and weaknesses of current teaching methodologies in fostering pronunciation development in this specific context. This study will contribute to the development of more effective and learner-centered pedagogical approaches for pronunciation instructions in English language programs designed for English learners in the Oromia region of Ethiopia.
