Charging Schemes for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles in Smart Grid: A Survey

Abstract: Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have emerged as an important tool in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, due to their lower dependency on fossil fuel. Since, for cost efficiency, PHEVs have a limited battery capacity, they must be recharged often and especially after trips. Thus, efficient battery charging plays an important role on the success of PHEVs commercial adoption. This paper surveys the stateof-the-art of existing PHEV battery charging schemes. We classify these schemes into four classes, nam… Show more

“…The topic of EM is vast, and it can cover several aspects, like energy efficiency, power quality, energy management and vehicle autonomy, ES, interoperability, citizen behavior, security and safety, grid load impact, and environmental impact. Vehicle charging is a very important element, and special focus has been given on charging technologies, charging plugs, charging power options, and charging infrastructure …”

“…Specifically, the authors in [7] describe centralized and decentralized schemes, without mention of hierarchical schemes that have been widely explored in the recent literature. The authors in [8] propose a more general classification of charging schemes as uncontrolled, indirectly controlled, smart, and bidirectional. In [9], charging schemes are first classified as unidirectional or bidirectional and then as centralized or decentralized, and whether mobility aspects are considered or not.…”
