“Charge while driving” for electric vehicles: road traffic modeling and energy assessment

Abstract: The aim of this research study is to present a method for analyzing the performance of the wireless inductive charge-while-driving (CWD) electric vehicles, from both traffic and energy points of view. To accurately quantify the electric power required from an energy supplier for the proper management of the charging system, a traffic simulation model is implemented. This model is based on a mesoscopic approach, and it is applied to a freight distribution scenario. Lane changing and positioning are managed acco… Show more

“…Currently, wireless charging system can be categorized as inductive power transfer, capacitive wireless power transfer, magnetic gear wireless power transfer and resonant inductive power transfer [94] - [98]. Meanwhile, wireless charging in motion has been sought out [99], [100]. However, large air gap and coil misalignment result in low energy efficiency and system reliability.…”

“…The input traffic flow for the motorway is simulated in this paper with a different approach with respect to previous studies [7,13,14,19] to take into account a hourly representation of the time profile along the day such as that provided in [21], where the hour variation is described as a percentage of the mean value of traffic (Fig. 1).…”

“…The EV supply equipment (EVSE) layout is assumed in this paper as the one defined in [13,14] and the analysis is applied to a roadway scenario with three lanes, where the right-hand lane is reserved for the charging activities. An extended analysis of a CWD scenario along highways has been performed in [6].…”
