Charge-Transfer Induced Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering in Silver Nanoparticle Assemblies

Abstract: Molecular junctions of metal/molecule/metal were fabricated with silver nanoparticles and functional molecules through layer-by-layer self-assembly techniques. The Raman scattering of the interconnecting molecules between the silver nanoparticles can be greatly enhanced. For the silver/4-aminothiophenol/silver (Ag/PATP/Ag) assembly, in particular, the larger enhancement of the b 2 modes, relative to that of the a 1 modes, is ascribed to the charge transfer between the silver nanoparticles tunneling through the… Show more

“…are frequently studied as SERS probe molecules [19,20] and particularly 4-ABT is widely used as molecular junction [21,22] and building block in SAMs [21,23] [24,25] or when applying high enough electrode potentials [26,27]. However, SERS spectra from benzenethiol on these metals are substantially the same as the normal Raman spectrum.…”

“…This means that electromagnetic "hot spots" had formed at the gaps between pairs of Au nanoparticles. [48][49][50][51][52][53] The Raman signal did not increase further, however, even after the adsorption of additional 1,4-PDI onto the vacant surfaces of the second Au nanoparticles. As a rough estimate, about 400 molecules residing only within a 10-nm diameter area of the center of the gap, adsorbed in the first stage, have thus contributed most of the measured Raman signal of 1,4-PDI.…”

“…Since then, many papers have been published, and the three strongly enhanced Raman peaks have been widely considered as an experimental evidence of a chemical mechanism of SERS. [20][21][28][29][30][31] Alternatively, it has been also proposed, based on the spectral similarity of 4-ABT and 4,4'-dimercaptoazobenzene (4,4'-DMAB) adsorbed on Ag, that these bands correspond to N=N stretching (a g symmetric vibrational modes) of 4,4'-DMAB produced from 4-ABT via a photocatalytic coupling reaction. 24,32 Recently, similar SERS spectra have been obtained when 4-ABT was adsorbed on nanostructured Pt substrates.…”
