Charge comparison protection of transmission lines-communications concepts

Abstract: bbstract -Charge comparison is a new transmission line protection system. It compares local and remote quantities of charge, using a bi-directional communications channel. Charge comparison is a form of current differential relaying. Traditional current differential relaying schemes have three critical communications-related problems: protection lost if the channel fails, large channel capacity required, and precise channel delay compensation required. In large measure, charge comparison overcomes these three c… Show more

“…Differential relays are used in abundance for the protection of generators and transformers. Proliferation of differential relays in transmission lines is due to the communication technologies advancement [5,6]. In the 1980s, these progress lead to producing a differential relay, which works by digital current and is based on optic fiber or microwave communication in Japan [7].…”

“…This protection was initially used for power transformers and generators [1,2,3,4]. However, with the development of communication and computer technology, this concept was also applied to transmission lines [5,6,7]. This allows improving speed clearing times for faults occurring at any point on a transmission line.…”

“…The main reason for using this relay type is due to their simplicity and high sensitivity. So, with the development of digital relays and communication technology, current differential relays have also been used for the protection of transmission lines [4,5,6]. However, when this relay type is applied to transmission lines there are some problems such as sampling misalignment, time delay of the communication channel, line capacitive charging current and errors in current transformers make current comparison difficult to achieve.…”
