Characters of the Heather Vole, Phenacomys, and the Red Tree Vole, Arborimus

Abstract: The differences between Phenacomys and Arborimus are evaluated. Elevation of the subgenus Arborimus to full generic rank is proposed. The heather vole and the red tree vole each are rare in museum collections and difficult to obtain in the field. Thus, information regarding these genera has been slow in accumulating. Merriam (1889) described the genus Phenacomys, designating Phenacomys intermedius as the type species. Subsequently, Hall and Kelson (1959) listed nine subspecies from Canada and the northwestern U… Show more

“…-Johnson (1973) has suggested that the differences between the living Phenacomys intermedius and Phenacomys longicaudus merit generic distinction and placed the latter in the genus Arborimus, Taylor. The dental distinction between Phenacomys intermedius and Arborimus longicaudus lies in the deeper fourth buccal reentrant (most anterior) on the occlusal surface of the first lower molar of Phenacomys.…”

“…Discussion. -Johnson (1973) has suggested that the living Phenacomys longicaudus is sufficiently distinct from Phenacomys intermedius to warrant designation as Arborimys longicaudus. This question has not been further considered in the present study, and the three living species, P. intermedius, P. longicaudus, and P. albipes (also included in Arborimys by Maser and others, 1981), are retained in Phenacomys without opinion.…”
