Systematic structural and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) measurements were carried out on Cenozoic clay-rich deposits from the Transdanubian Range, central part of the Alcapa Unit. The aim was to improve the knowledge of the Neogene tectonic evolution of the area and of the connection of the stress field and the magnetic fabric of the sediments. The measurements of AMS revealed dominant foliation with weak lineation for Middle Eocene-Lower Miocene sediments. The directions of AMS lineation are aligned either with the direction of NNE-SSW extension of a strike slip phase or with the direction of NE-SW extension of the main rifting phase of the Pannonian Basin (19-14 Ma).The studied Late Miocene sediments have foliated AMS fabric, maximum and intermediate AMS directions are intermixed, and the AMS fabrics do not show any sign of tectonic deformation. In contrast, joints and faults were observed in the same rocks. Detailed structural analysis shows two extensional phases between ca. 10-4 Ma, with E-W to WNW-ESE and with NW-SE extension, respectively, and the youngest neotectonic strike-slip phase. The contrast between the presence of markers of brittle deformation and the absence of tectonically-induced AMS lineation is striking, since the same types of sediments in the South Pannonian basin show just the opposite. The explanation may be that northward-moving and CCW-rotating Adria caused strong compression in the southern Pannonian Basin, resulting in ductile deformation of the clay-rich sediments and systematic reorganization of AMS texture, while in our study area sediments of similar character and age were at a larger distance from the strongly deforming basin part.

This work investigates how anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) recorded the strain related to the Early Cretaceous extensional processes in synrift sediments of the Maestrat basin (eastern Spain). Forty-two sites, distributed throughout the Lower Cretaceous sequence with dominant gentle dips, were sampled. Minerals contributing to the AMS are mainly phyllosilicates. The parallelism between magnetic and sedimentary foliation seems to indicate that a primary (synsedimentary and early diagenetic) magnetic fabric was preserved at 84% of sites. Consequently, preferred orientations of magnetic lineations are interpreted to record the effect of extensional processes coeval with sedimentation and diagenesis during this period. At these 35 sites, two main magnetic lineation orientations are found, delimiting two large domains: a NE-SW orientation prevailing in the NW sector of the basin (parallel to the extension direction of the Iberian basin), and NW-SE to NNW-SSE orientations to the SE (parallel to the extension direction controlling the western Tethys margin). Directional variability demonstrates that the Maestrat basin is located at the boundary between two domains (Iberian and Tethyan) undergoing different plate-scale extensional processes. The subsequent Cenozoic tectonic inversion affected the synsedimentary magnetic fabrics at only a few sites at the borders of the basin, where compressive features are more developed. Received

Anisotropic magnetic susceptibility (AMS) analysis of 1454 samples evenly distributed along an 1800 m section in the South Pyrenean Zone is presented. The sampled rocks are pre-and syn-tectonic limestones, marls and sandstones of Ypresian-Lutetian age. They are weakly deformed rocks sampled from both limbs of the N-S trending Boltaña Anticline (oblique to the WNW-ESE main Pyrenean trend). Rock magnetism analyses, including low temperature and high field magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm a dominant paramagnetic signal and hence allow the interpretation of AMS in terms of preferred rock fabric or finite strain orientation. Therefore, this study was focused on obtaining an independent kinematic information from a vast set of AMS data from particular structural positions. The three directional maxima for the maximum axis of the magnetic ellipsoid (K MAX , magnetic lineation) can be tentatively related to major tectonic events in the Central Pyrenees. A first stage (recording a N-S magnetic lineation) is related to an oblique ramp of the Cotiella Thrust, emplaced during Ypresian times. A pseudo-progressive variation turns into a second stage (linked to a NW-SE K MAX orientation maximum) that can be related to Pyrenean compression. Both stages witness a far-field imprint of active structures on the foreland sediments. Once the Boltaña Anticline was nucleated (during the Lutetian), a predominant, more constant NW-SE trend is observed, this near-field magnetic fabric being the only lineation imprinted in the rocks. A final stage arrived in the course of vertical axis rotation during the Late Lutetian-Bartonian. This latest event was responsible for the present configuration of the Boltaña Anticline (N-S).
