Abstract:Sickle cell disease (SCD) is marked by episodic vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC). Recurrent VOC creates a proinflammatory state that induces phenotypic alterations in innate immune cells. Monocytes are of particular interest to VOC pathophysiology because they are especially malleable to inflammatory signaling.
