Characterizing Tantalum Sputtered Coatings on Steel by Using Eddy Currents

Abstract: With the goal of building a system for fast inspection of coatings, we have developed a method that uses induced eddy currents to characterize tantalum alpha and beta phases in a layer of thin sputtered tantalum on steel. The detection of the tantalum phases is based on the large difference in electrical conductivity between them. Measurements based on the method agree well with values based on theoretical calculations. We applied the method in a two-probe differential system having higher sensitivity and less… Show more

“…In this paper, The problem of the copper eddy current field we study to solve can be classified to the problem of multilayer electric conductor eddy current to solve, and harmonic eddy current field analytical model of multilayer electric conductor was founded early in the last century 60 s by Dodd and his company, and is widely used, but the harmonic eddy current field model Dodd put forward is an integral model [3][4], so its computation process takes long, and is not easy to be high-precision. Later, Fan Mengbao established multilayer electric conductor harmonic eddy current field series analytical model based on the theory of reflection and transmission by Truncated Region Eigenfunction Expansion method (TREE) and the transmission rules of electromagnetic waves in multilayered homogeneous medium [5][6]. The model of analytical model of pulsed eddy current method can be divided into two inspects: [7][8] inverse Fourier transform and inverse Laplace transform. For inverse Fourier transformation ,due to the highness of requirements of mathematics, simple solving, used widely compared with inverse Laplace transform, but the method of modeling accuracy is affected by the Gibbs ' effect.…”

“…The eddy current method has been used in several industries, including space [1,2] and chemical processing [3,4]. Some specific applications include detection of cracks [5,6,7,8,9], measurements of material thickness [10], determining metal thinning due to corrosion [11], measurements of coating thickness [12], conversion coating [13], determining electrical conductivity [14], heat damage detection [3], and detection of corrosion in heat exchanger tubes [4]. This paper presents progress in the development of an eddy current prototype that combines positional and eddy-current data to produce a visual representation of materials being tested [15].…”
