Characterizing Potential Exposure to the Public From Low-Level Radioactive Waste Transportation by Truck

Abstract: To address public concern about potential exposure to gamma radiation from legal-weight low-level radioactive waste truck shipments to the Nevada Test Site, a stationary, automated array of four pressurized ion chambers was established for trucks to pass through. Data were collected from 1,012 of the 2,260 trucks that transported low-level radioactive waste to the Nevada Test Site from February through December 2003. To avoid perception of biasing a potential exposure low, the maximum reading (muR per hour; mu… Show more

“…Another concern of some stakeholders is that LLW and mixed waste, shipped by trucks from approved DOE and U.S. Department of Defense (U.S. DOD) sites across the United States, are disposed at two sites on the NNSS. Much of this waste is shipped by trucks that travel secondary highways in Nevada and western Utah, passing through towns where CEMP stations are located (Miller et al 2007). …”

“…Residents of the urban sections of Clark County, in particular, are concerned because the trucks carrying this material pass through fairly densely populated areas on both primary and secondary highways. Excellent studies by the Desert Research Institute (Miller, et al, 2005;2007) measured the external radiation doses from these trucks and provided a benchmark for estimating the doses sustained by the population along the transportation routes. The studies did not, however, assess the doses to the population in the event of anaccident involving these trucks.…”
