Characterization of X-chromosome specific satellite DNA of Muntiacus muntjak vaginalis

Abstract: A highly repeated DNA (designated satellite IA) was isolated from cultured cells of Muntiacus muntjak vaginalis and its organization analyzed by the use of restriction nucleases and hybridization experiments with cloned DNA-fragments. Several restriction nucleases cleave the satellite IA DNA into a series of fragments, which are multiples of a basic repeat unit of 800 bp. “…Since the probe used here was a consensus sequence based upon a population of variable 31-mers, we may assume that both levels of periodicity (i.e., 31-bp and 1.4 kb) have been preserved since the Bovini last shared a common ancestor, about 2-4 MY ago (Groves 1981). The 1.4-kb periodicity that was seen in the Bovini, yet found to be absent in other taxa, is consistent with the results of Bogenberger et al (1985Bogenberger et al ( , 1987, who isolated a satellite called IA from the Indian muntjak, a cervid not examined in the present study.
