Characterization of two urostylid ciliates, Metaurostylopsis flavicana spec. nov. and Tunicothrix wilberti (Lin & Song, 2004) Xu et al., 2006 (Ciliophora, Stichotrichia), from a mangrove nature protection area in China

Abstract: Characterization of two urostylid ciliates, Metaurostylopsis flavicana spec. nov. and Tunicothrix wilberti (Lin & Song, 2004) Xu et al., 2006 (Ciliophora, Stichotrichia), from a mangrove nature protection area in China , isolated from the Shenzhen Mangrove Protection Area on the coast of the South China Sea, were investigated using live observation and protargol impregnation techniques. Metaurostylopsis flavicana is characterized by its elongate body shape, yellowish body colour and bright-yellow cortical gr… Show more

“…However, in the SSU-rDNA phylogenies by Song et al (2011) and Wang et al (2011), it is clearly separated from other species in Metaurostylopsis . A more detailed morphological analysis of this species demonstrated that it differs from other Metaurostylopsis species by a lower number of frontoterminal cirri (2 vs. 3–8) and the absence of a midventral row, two generic features according to Berger (2006) and Song et al (2001, 2011).…”

“…Neourostylopsis flavicana was originally assigned to Metaurostylopsis by Wang et al (2011) based on its ciliature. However, in the SSU-rDNA phylogenies by Song et al (2011) and Wang et al (2011), it is clearly separated from other species in Metaurostylopsis .…”

“…Furthermore, Neourostylopsis did not cluster with Metaurostylopsis in all trees although they are morphologically similar. This is due to (i) the frontal cirri are arranged in a corona in Neourostylopsis , whereas there are only three enlarged frontal cirri in Metaurostylopsis ; and; (ii) the midventral complex is composed of midventral pairs and midventral rows in Metaurostylopsis , whereas only midventral pairs are present in Neourostylopsis (Chen, Huang, & Song, ; Chen, Shao et al., ; Lu, Wang, Huang, Shi, & Chen, ; Pan et al., ; Shao, Miao et al., ; Wang, Hu, Huang, Al‐Rasheid, & Warren, ).…”
