Characterization of the wood combustion process based on the TG analysis, numerical modelling and measurements performed on the experimental stand

Abstract: Abstract. The paper presents selected results of thermogravimetric (TG) analyses for softwood (pine) and hardwood (beech). The composition of the studied fuels has been defined and described. Both wood types used in the TG tests were studied in order to define their content of basic components such as lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. Types of wood used in the TGA have been combusted on the experimental stand which is equipped with a set of temperature sensors and an exhaust analyser. A comparison of the TG… Show more

“…A more occasional use of bone fuel has also been detected as well at the Enlène (Ariège, France) [ 20 ] and Alkerdi 2 (Navarre, Spain) caves [ 30 ]. The combustible properties of wood have been thoroughly characterized in previous studies [ 31 , 32 ]. In this sense, we have to consider that not all animal and vegetable fuel remains have the same features for preservation (i.e., soft tissue remains are very perishable).…”

“…This factor determines the share of incomplete combustion in the entire chemistry of the combustion and determines the presence of combustible particulate matter in the exhaust gas. Consequently, to guarantee clean combustion of biomass, it is necessary to provide the number and the locations of the air inlets designed for a specific type of biomass and geometry of the combustion chamber [7].…”

“…However, to avoid some problems environment-related issues (i.e. emission of pollutants), the process of combustion in this type of boilers has to be performed in a specific manner that requires advanced air distribution systems [6][7][8]. The key part of this system is the external air manifold dividing and transporting air to appropriate sections of the boiler.…”

“…The wood was stored in the same place (mesh crate with unconstrained air flow between logs) and logs for each measurement were taken from representative parts of the box. The detailed study of this type of wood including DTA and TGA methods and its combustion was presented in [23]. To ensure identical process conditions, the throttle of the air supply from the top inlet was left 100% open in each test, while the other dampers remained closed.…”
