Characterization of the sexual pattern of Parastacus varicosus (Crustacea: Decapoda: Parastacidae)

Abstract: Abstract. Freshwater crayfishes of the genus Parastacus are intersex, i.e., show characteristics of both sexes in the same individual; also, intersexuality has been documented in hermaphroditic species. The aim of this study was to analyze the gonads of Parastacus varicosus, characterizing its sexual pattern. The animals were collected at Cova do Touro, Gravataí, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Three sexual forms were identified: intersex females, intersex males, and transitional specimens showing an ovotestes gon… Show more

“…Crustaceans show variations in intermediary metabolism, which are mainly related to the reproductive period because of the high energy demands at this time (Kucharski and Da Silva, 1991a;Rosa and Nunes, 2003a;Silva-Castiglioni et al, 2008). Metabolic reserves are also used and/or stored during periods of reduction of the oxygen level in the environment, where principally an increase in lactate occurs as a product of the anaerobic metabolism; in crustaceans, lactate is the main anaerobic metabolite (Hill et al, 1991;Hervant et al, , 1997Zou et al, 1996;Oliveira et al, 2004).…”

“…Rudolph, 1997). The sexual system of Parastacus varicosus Faxon, 1898, has been studied by Rudolph et al (2001) and by Silva-Castiglioni et al (2008) in Uruguayan and Brazilian populations, respectively. Nevertheless, this species can not be classified into any of the aforementioned sexual systems, because the results obtained are contradictory.…”

“…Nevertheless, this species can not be classified into any of the aforementioned sexual systems, because the results obtained are contradictory. According to Rudolph et al (2001), the species presents permanent intersexuality, whereas Silva-Castiglioni et al (2008) classify it as a protandric hermaphrodite.…”
