“…Both LPS and CLP-OP induced sepsis are known to activate the HPA axis. We and others have shown that LPS administration acutely elevates ACTH and corticosterone levels [16,44]. In line with those studies, we have found that LPS strongly enriched genes involved in cholesterol metabolism and steroidogenesis pathways.…”

“…In addition, we have also found and validated, strong upregulation of Csf2 and Csf3, also known and GM-CSF and G-CSF, as potent chemoattractants and growth factors that can alter the leukocyte recruitment and emergency hematopoiesis from the bone marrow [50]. The activation of those multiple chemokines in the adrenal gland may explain an increased infiltration of neutrophils and immature monocytes/macrophages after systemic LPS administration found in our previous studies [44,46]. Interestingly, the results of this RNA-seq analysis also validated our previous report showing LPSmediated Del-1 downregulation [16].…”

“…Expression of iNOS during inflammation is followed by overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) which is normally produced from the other isoforms of NOS [neural (nNOS) and endothelial (eNOS)] [39] . In adrenal cortex the normal level of NO was documented to be due to eNOS produced by its cells [40] . This could be supported in the present study by the presence of a basal level of NO in the control group despite the negative iNOS immunoreaction and its significant increase in LPS-group versus control.…”
