Characterization of the complete chloroplast genome of <i>Ajuga forrestii</i> (Lamiaceae), a medicinal plant in southwest of China

Leonurus sibiricus Linnaeus 1753, an annual or biennial herb found in northern China, Mongolia, and Russia, typically grows in stony, sandy grasslands, and pine forests. This study sequenced and reported the complete chloroplast genome of L. sibiricus for the first time. The entire circular genome measures 151,689 bp in length, with a GC content of 38.4%. A total of 133 genes were annotated, including 88 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNAs, and eight rRNAs. The genome exhibits a typical quadripartite structure, comprising a large single-copy (LSC 82,820 bp) region, a small single-copy (SSC 17,619 bp) region, and a pair of inverted repeat (IR 25,625 bp each) regions. Phylogenetic analysis using the maximum-likelihood method indicates that L. sibiricus is most closely related to L. japonicus Houttuyn. This study provides valuable genomic resources for further research on the phylogenetics and biodiversity of the genus Leonurus.

Ajuga spectabilis Nakai is a Korean endemic species in Lamiaceae. In spite of its importance, genomic studies are not performed on this species. Here, we report the complete plastid genome sequences of A. spectabilis , which will provide valuable information for its natural conservation and future studies for the plastid genome evolution. The plastid genome is 150,417 bp in length, containing a large single-copy region (LSC) of 82,140 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 17,165 bp which are separated by a pair of inverted repeats (IR) of 25,556 bp. It encodes 113 genes, including 79 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and four rRNA genes. The overall GC content is 38.3%, and those in the LSC, SSC, and IR regions are 36.4%, 32.2%, and 43.3%, respectively, which is consistent with other Ajuga species. Our phylogenetic analysis revealed that A. spectabilis formed a close relationship with A. ciliata and A. decumbens .

Plants of the genus Plectranthus are used for the treatment of digestive problems, skin diseases, and allergies, with a wide variety of uses. Here, the complete chloroplast genome sequence of Plectranthus hadiensis (Benth. ex E.Mey) Codd. 1788 was assembled and characterized for the first time. The full length of the chloroplast genome is 152,484 bp, consisting of a small single-copy region of 17,686 bp, a large single-copy region of 83,380 bp, and a pair of inverted repeats of 51,418 bp. The overall GC content is 37.73%. The chloroplast genome contains 131 unique genes, including 87 protein-coding genes, 36 transfer RNA genes, and eight ribosomal RNA genes. Phylogenetic tree construction based on the complete chloroplast genome sequences of 25 species (23 Nepetoideae, two Ajugoideae) of the Lamiaceae family showed that P. hadiensis exhibited the closest relationship with Isodon .
