Characterization of the APETALA2/Ethylene-responsive factor (AP2/ERF) transcription factor family in sunflower

Abstract: One of the most prominent families of genes in plants is the AP2/ERF which play an important role in regulating plant growth and responses to various stresses. In this research, a genome-wide survey was conducted to recognize the AP2/ERF genes in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), and a total of 288 HaAP2/ERF was obtained. Phylogenetic analysis divided them into four sub-families, including 248 ERF, 4 RAV and 35 AP2, and one subgroup of the Soloist family. Localization of chromosome, gene structure, the conserv… Show more

“…For example, APETALA2-like ethylene-responsive transcription factors (EVM0000677.1, EVM0023986.1, EVM0021041.1, and EVM0019895.1) were identified as being under divergent selection in PC1. This plant-specific transcription factor has been shown to play an important role in regulating plant growth and responses to cold, heat, salt, drought and flooding 39 , 40 . Peroxidase (EVM0032298.1), an enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of a particular substrate by hydrogen peroxide, was differentially expressed under drought and low temperature stress 41 , 42 .…”

“…Interestingly, the TaMYB2 gene of wheat is used as a molecular marker for drought stress tolerance in common wheat [51]. The characterization of the HaAP2/ERF transcription-factor family showed that the AP2/ERF -family genes were overexpressed as a result of drought, cold, salt and heat treatments [52]. Additionally, the watermelon ClWRKYs had a diverse response to abiotic stresses, which suggests that WRKYs positively or negatively participate in plant tolerance of drought, salt or cold stress [53].…”

“…Such a group of transcription factors in plants is activated by ethylene signaling under biotic or abiotic stresses. APETALA2/ethylene response factors (AP2/ERFs) are a superfamily of plant-exclusive transcription factors involved in the ethylene-inducible response (Gutterson and Reuber 2004 ; Mizoi et al 2012 ; Najafi et al 2018 ). APETALA2 was first isolated from the floral development-related proteins in Arabidopsis (Jofuku et al 1994 ).…”
