Characterization of SWCNT products manufactured in Russia and the prospects for their industrial application

Abstract: Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are of the greatest interest for application in materials used for various purposes due to all of their unique properties. However, the practical use of SWCNTs has, until quite recently, been limited by the absence of a cheap industrial process for manufacturing them. Currently, a technology for the synthesis of SWCNTs from hydrocarbon raw materials providing the initial SWCNTs product of a sufficiently high quality has been developed in Russia for the first time in world … Show more

“…The single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) Tuball TM grade 75% (OCSiAl Europe, Leudelange, Luxembourg) selected for this study had a length exceeding 5 µm [26], a bulk density of 0.09 g/cm 3 [27], and surface area of 331 m 2 /g [27].…”

“…On the other hand, rope‐like structures of SWCNTs were clearly observed on the surface of SWCNT‐PLL‐SG and SWCNT‐PLL‐ITO substrates. The ropes were highly entangled at the agglomerate position, and the structure itself had typical characteristics of stranded behavior for the overall substrate areas, which are probably associated with the easy agglomeration properties of gas‐phase synthesized SWCNTs reported elsewhere . The Raman spectra of SWCNT‐PLL‐ITO, SWCNT‐PLL‐SG and bare ITO are shown in supporting information Figure S1.…”

“…Even for the usage of pristine single walled carbon nano horns for sensing both DA and UA, they were synthesized using CO 2 laser ablation of pure graphite, which is not attractive for the process scalability required for several tens of tons of weight per year. With respect to practical manufacturability, the gas‐phase synthesized methods reported elsewhere are much more attractive for low‐cost production of SWCNTs because other methods for synthesis of SWCNTs are typically reported to be non‐scalable, thus requiring high‐cost manufacturing for SWCNTs. In this sense, evaluation of the performance of bio‐sensors with pristine SWCNTs synthesized with this methodology, which is immediately available for scalable production, is very meaningful.…”

“…Single-walled CNTs were obtained via the electric arc method with the use of a Ni/Y catalyst [38] (provided by OAO Carbon Chg, www.carbonchg.ru). Single-walled CNTs were functionalized as described in [39] and dried in bulk at 100°С before use.…”
