Characterization of Steady-State Current Ripple in Interleaved Power Converters Under Inductance Mismatches

Abstract: Interleaved power converters are used in high-current applications due to their inherent reduction of semiconductors stress and total ripple. Ripple reduction is accomplished by a correct phase shifting, and the filtering improvement explained by the increase in the ripple frequency. However, these benefits are wasted, among other reasons, by the mismatch of the phase inductor value. As a consequence, differences in the ripple amplitude among phases are produced, leading to a total current ripple significantly… Show more

“…For interleaved converters, each phase can control its current individually and the sawtooth-shaped carriers used for the generation of the PWM can be phase-shifted to obtain an interleaved total converter current i con . For optimum interleaving, a phase-shifting controller can be added and various methods that account for imbalances between the phases can be used [16], [29], [30]. The phase-shifting controller is not further discussed, as it is irrelevant for the present study.…”

“…This type of circuits are formed by two switches and inductances in the same phase of different converters, the dc bus voltage is the only electromotive force contained in the circuits. In contrast, the nonzero-sequence circulating current paths, for instance, O-A-L a1 -S11-P-N-S62-L b2 -B-O,O-A-L a2 -S12-P-N-S61-L b1 -B-O,O-B-L b2 -S32-P-N-S41-L a1 -A-O,O-B-L b1 -S31-P-N-S42-L a2 -A-O contain two more ac phase voltages. Generally, in practical applications, while modular converters are usually designed to have equal values of parameters, tolerance in parameter dispersion is very common, especially in the line inductance [27], [28]. As a consequence, the values of three phase filter inductance are not strictly equal, which will lead to asynchronous actions in switches, and consequently, circulating currents will be generated.…”

“…In recent years, interleaved DC-DC converters have been widely used in household appliances, industrial equipment, and national defense construction, among others [1,2]. Interleaved DC-DC converters can effectively reduce the amplitude of the total current ripple, increase the ripple frequency of the output current, and improve the ability to control high currents [3][4][5][6][7]. Within DC-DC converters, the power switch works at very high switching frequencies.…”
