Characterization of some stone samples of archaeological interest via Compton profile analysis

Abstract

In the present investigation, Compton profiles of archaeologically important samples such as White marble, Black stone and soap stone were normalized by using the effective atomic number determined from their single differential scattering cross section measured in a goniometer assembly with a HpGe detector. Normalized Compton profiles so obtained show reasonably good agreement with the free atom Hartree-Fock wave function based values of Biggs' et al. Further, we make an attempt to demonstrate that an analysis based on the trend of normalized Compton profiles can provide a discrimination among such samples thereby resulting in their consequent characterization and provenance classification.
