Characterization of Sol-Gel Derived Calcium Hydroxyapatite Coatings Fabricated on Patterned Rough Stainless Steel Surface

Abstract: Sol-gel derived calcium hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2; CHA) thin films were deposited on stainless steel substrates with transverse and longitudinal patterned roughness employing a spin-coating technique. Each layer in the preparation of CHA multilayers was separately annealed at 850 °C in air. Fabricated CHA coatings were placed in simulated body fluid (SBF) for 2, 3, and 4 weeks and investigated after withdrawal. For the evaluation of obtained and treated with SBF coatings, diffuse reflectance infrared Fou… Show more

“…The LDH sample with higher crystallinity was obtained from the steel substrate. Interestingly, no side iron oxide (Fe 2 O 3 and Fe 3 O 4 ) phases were formed during the synthesis, as was observed in the case of sol–gel synthesis of calcium hydroxyapatite on stainless-steel substrate [63].…”

“…It is well-known that the sol–gel processing route for the preparation of thin films of different materials is a low-cost and simple method, which allows for better chemical homogeneity due to molecular-level mixing of the precursors [60,61,62,63,64,65]. However, the fabrication of LDH films by the sol–gel chemistry method has not been given sufficient attention to date.…”

“…It has also proven useful in implant-related studies. The following examples focused on analysis of hydroxyapatite coatings on stainless steel [102] and titanium implants [103]. In the first case, Jonauske et al evaluated calcium hydroxyapatite (Ca 10 (PO 4 ) 6 (OH) 2 , CHA) coatings obtained by a sol-gel method as a means of protecting steel surfaces to aid their poor bioactivity and associated formation of fibrous tissue, issues typical for this material.…”

“…It also reduces the duration of the healing action of metallic implants. [16][17][18] From the above literature, it is concluded that the HAp has poor mechanical properties and lower wear resistance. However, the problem can overcome by combining HAp with 254 SS so that the former provides better biocompatibility and, later, necessary mechanical strength.…”
