Acidic sodium nitrate (NaNO 3 ) is the fine particles commonly found in urban atmosphere, which is beneficial to the formation of nitro-aromatic compounds (NACs). The NACs and optics of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) generated from the photo-oxidation of ethylbenzene with acid NaNO 3 fine particles were characterized in the current study. The results demonstrated that acidic NaNO 3 can significantly promote the formation of SOA. Compared with the carbonyls detected in SOA without fine particles, nitrophenols, nitrocatechols and their derivatives are measured as the major components of SOA with acid NaNO 3 . The N=O chromosphore in NACs enhanced the light absorption capacity of SOA. The mass absorption coefficient averaged over 200-600 nm () of SOA gradually increased with the increasing of acidic NaNO 3 . While, the of SOA with 100 μg/m 3 acidic NaNO 3 was comparable to that of biomass burning organic aerosols. These would provide the experimental basis for studying the formation and optics of anthropogenic NACs in the background of high concentration of acid NaNO 3 fine particles.

Aromatic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles are known to contribute to radiative forcing and light absorption of atmosphere. However, the complex refractive index (CRI), single-scattering albedo (SSA) and other optical parameters of aromatic SOA are not well understood. SOA generated from photooxidation of toluene with a variety concentration of ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4) seed particles in a smog chamber were investigated in the current study. The real part CRI of toluene SOA without seeds derived and based on aerosol albedometer measurements is 1.486 ± 0.002 at λ = 470 nm, showing a good agreement with available experimental data, and its SSA was measured to be 0.92 ± 0.02 at λ = 470 nm, indicating that the SOA particles without seeds have strong scattering ability. The SSA of SOA formed in the presence of 300 μg/m3 (NH4)2SO4 seed was 0.81 ± 0.02 at λ = 470 nm, less than the SSA of SOA without seed. SSA of SOA decreased, while the imaginary part of CRI (k) of SOA increased with increasing concentration of (NH4)2SO4 seed, demonstrating that the adsorption capacity of SOA formed in the presence of (NH4)2SO4 seed is enhanced. Different from the carboxyl compounds measured in the SOA without seed, imidazoles with strong chromophores of C=N that are responsible for the light absorption were detected as the principal constituents of SOA formed in the presence of (NH4)2SO4 seed. These would provide valuable information for discussing the optics and components of aromatic SOA in the urban atmosphere containing a high concentration of (NH4)2SO4 fine particles.

Abstract. Fifty-six years (1961–2016) of daily surface downward solar irradiation, sunshine duration, diurnal temperature range and the fraction of the sky covered by clouds in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, were analyzed. The main purpose was to contribute to the characterization and understanding of the dimming and brightening effects on solar global radiation in this part of South America. As observed in most of the previous studies worldwide, in this study, during the period between 1961 up to the early 1980's, more specifically up to 1983, a negative trend in surface solar irradiation was detected in São Paulo, characterizing the occurrence of a dimming effect. A similar behavior, a negative trend, was also observed for sunshine duration and the diurnal temperature range, the three variables in opposition to the trend in the sky cover fraction. However, a brightening effect, as observed in western industrialized countries in more recent years, was not observed. Instead, for surface downward irradiation, the negative trend persisted and still in consonance to the cloud cover fraction increasing trend. The trends for sunshine duration and the diurnal temperature range, by contrast, changed signal. Some possible causes for the discrepancy were discussed, such as the frequency of fog occurrence, urban heat island effects, aerosol changes and greenhouse gas concentration increase. Future studies on aerosol effect are encouraged, particularly with higher temporal resolution as well as modeling studies, to better analyze the contribution of each possible causes.
