Characterization of Reaction between ZnO and COS

Abstract: In order to understand the behavior of COS in a ZnO desulfurization reactor, the reaction between ZnO and COS was studied in the presence of gases which compose a coal-derived gas. The behavior of COS in the reaction zone of a ZnO packed bed can be predicted as follows:  H2S in coal-derived gas reacts more easily with ZnO than COS; most of COS is converted to H2S by catalytic hydrolysis and then reacts with ZnO, although a part of COS may react directly with ZnO; H2 accelerates the conversion of COS to H2S; th… Show more

“…The sulfur breakthrough capacities appear to be strongly correlated with the calculated COS concentrations, as described by reaction (2). We believe that the apparent low H 2 S capacities are actually the result of COS in the product, since ZnO cannot remove COS efficiently [8], and our analytical system was not set up to distinguish between H 2 S and COS (it proved difficult to obtain a COS standard). “…Lee and Kim [28] used the shrinking core model [29], the homogeneous model [30] and the modified volumetric model [31] to analyze the results obtained in the CO 2 activation of waste tire in a thermobalance. They found good agreement between experimental and theoretical data using the modified volumetric model finding a rate expression in terms of temperature, CO 2 partial pressure and solid conversion.…”

“…The former could be catalyzed by the formed ZnS and ZnO nanoparticles [37,38]. The dominant role of the homogenous reactions (7) and (8) in Test 2 is accounted for by the fact that the high density of H 2 S and H 2 O molecules is maintained in the reactor up to the end of the reaction (Table 1).…”
