Characterization of Pyrethroid Resistance and Susceptibility to Coumaphos in MexicanBoophilus microplus(Acari: Ixodidae)

Abstract: Two patterns of pyrethroid resistance were characterized from Boophilus microplus (Canestrini) collected in Mexico. One was characteristic of a kdr mutation and the other involved esterase and cytochrome P450 enzyme systems. Very high resistance to permethrin, cypermethrin, and flumethrin, not synergized by TPP and PBO and high resistance to DDT, characterized the kdr-like pattern found in the Corrales and San Felipe strains. Esterase and cytochrome P450-dependent resistance was found in the Coatzacoalcos stra… Show more

“…(B.) microplus from Mexico (MILLER et al, 1999), but molecular studies have not been reported, and, with PBO's lack of complete specificity towards the cytochrome P450 family, a mechanism cannot be attributed to a specific P450. Finally, although a number of glutathione S-transferases have been identified in R.…”

“…(B.) microplus was Miller et al (1999) working with pyrethroid resistant tick populations from Mexico. Their work was verified by He et al (1999) who used gene sequencing to discover a specific amino acid substitution in Domain III (phenylalanine to isoleucine) of the R.…”

“…The Mexican strains were challenged either with coumaphos (Tuxpan, San Roman, Caporal, and Pesqueria) or permethrin (Coatzcolcos and San Felipe) to maintain their resistance to the respective acaricide. Resistance proÞles of these tick strains to other acaricides have been described in previous accounts (Miller et al 1999;Li et al 2003Li et al , 2004.…”
