Characterization of Portuguese populations of Vitis vinifera L. ssp. sylvestris (Gmelin) Hegi

Abstract: Wild populations of Vitis vinifera L. have been located in Portugal. Morphological characterization was carried out in three populations located in Alcá cer do Sal, Castelo Branco, and Montemor-o-Novo, and then compared using multivariate discriminant analysis. These populations were from three different hydrological basins, therefore cross-pollination was not possible. It was verified that in each population all plants were different. The data suggest that the frequency of female and male plants is rather var… Show more

“…However, expected heterozygosity (H e ) was significantly higher (P<0.05) than observed heterozygosity (H obs ) in wild forms. A similar H obs reduction has been reported in wild grapevine (Cunha et al 2007;Lopes et al 2009;Zecca et al 2010). It suggests a high level of genetic relationship among the individuals of the same wild populations.…”

“…Scores for 36 wild vines were Fig. 2 Projections of wild plants, based on morphologic data onto the plane defined by the 1st (20.89%) and the 2nd (16.67%) principal axes with minimum spanning tree superimpose previously reported on Cunha et al 2007. All wild female plants produced small or very small and blueblack berries (level 5 of OIV 225).…”

“…All of these populations are located in the Tagus River basin and in the Alentejo region (Cunha et al 2004). A selection of four of these wild-vine populations, in four distinct hydrological basins, has been characterised morphologically (Cunha et al 2007(Cunha et al , 2009, as well as its sanitary status assessed (Santos et al 2003). The aim of this work was to measure the present genetic diversity of these populations, using nuclear and chloroplastidial microsatellites as molecular markers.…”
