Characterization of plasma exosomal microRNAs in responding to radiotherapy of human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: radiotherapy is one of the main treatment methods for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (eScc). Previous research has shown that plasma exosomal micrornas (mirnas) can predict therapeutic outcome. in the present study, to identify potential exosomal mirnas that respond to radiotherapy, plasma exosomal mirnas from eScc patients undergoing radiotherapy were isolated and sequenced. upregulated and downregulated mirnas were detected from patients pre-and post-radiotherapy, and it was found that they play distinct… Show more

“…For example, it was demonstrated that miR‑652 and miR‑30a alter migration but not proliferation. 49 These studies highlight the differentially expressed components of exosomes during and before RT and provide a reference for exploring noninvasive plasma biomarkers for diagnosis and evaluation of therapeutic effects.…”

“…One of the adverse clinical impacts of exosomes as a source of tumors is their capacity to transfer resistance horizontally (61)(62)(63). Drug-resistant tumor cells can transfer drug resistance to sensitive cells through exosomes (18,64), thus generating new anti-tumor cell reservoirs. Exosomes from drug-resistant tumor cells may confer resistance phenotype to sensitive cells through intercellular signaling.…”

“…Many studies have found tumor-derived exosomes in the circulating blood of esophageal cancer patients (16)(17)(18). These exosomes include numerous tumor-related specific molecules, such as mRNA, protein, lipid, and non-coding RNA., making them a powerful signal transmission function (19).…”

“…Bene ting from the non-invasive, convenient, and e cient features, plasma exosome detection is increasingly explored in the early diagnosis of cancer, among which, miRNAs are more stable because of the speci c sorting mechanism [7], may offer an e cient, non-invasive or minimally invasive marker alternative. Recently plasma exosomal miRNAs have been shown to be early diagnostic markers for gastric cancer [8,9], epithelial ovarian cancer [9], pancreatic cancer [10], lung adenocarcinoma [11], and can be used to assess treatment response and prognosis in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma [12], non-small cell lung cancer [13], breast cancer [14], etc. In LSCC, serum exosomal hsa-miR-941 has been identi ed as a promising oncogenic marker, up-regulated level of hsa-miR-941 promotes cell proliferation and invasion [15].…”
