INTRODUCTIONM ithun (Bos frontalis) is a "mountain cattle" living as a semi-wild free-range in the North-Eastern Hill (NEH) region of India and responsible for the socio-cultural and economic status of the tribal population (Simoons, 1984). Latest livestock census of India (2007) indicated Mithun density and population is decreasing and is mainly due to lack of proper breeding management in the tribal regions. So proper and scientific interventions are needed from all quarters to conserve and preserve the Mithun population to enhance the socio-economic-cultural status of the tribes. Natural breeding is followed in Mithun, Research ArticleAbstract | A study was designed to measure the semen quality parameters (SQP) such as volume, colour, concentration, mass activity, percent of sperm motility, viability, total morphological abnormality, intactness of acrosome, plasma membrane, nucleus, vanguard distance travelled by sperm in bovine cervical mucus and hydrogen ion concentration in freezable and non-freezable ejaculates of Mithun. Fifty ejaculates were collected from ten matured Mithun bulls and split to freezable and non-freezable ejaculates based on the post thaw motility (40% or more considered as freezable ejaculates). The result has shown that SQP differed significantly (P< 0.05) between the freezable and non-freezable ejaculates and freezable ejaculates have significantly (P< 0.05) higher value than the non-freezable ejaculates. However, morphological abnormality and pH were significantly (P< 0.05) higher in non-freezable than in freezable ejaculates. Mass activity was positively (P< 0.05) correlated with motility, liveability, integrity of acrosome, plasma membrane, nucleus and BCMPT and negatively correlated (P< 0.05) with morphological abnormality. Concluded that SQPs were significantly higher in freezable than in non-freezable ejaculates and indicates freezable sperm has higher structural stability than the non-freezable sperm caused freezable sperm.

The importance of rumen microbial ecology and diversity has gained signifi cance in recent years as microbes have a profound effect on bioconversion of feed to end products which in turn affect productivity and also the environment. Recent research indicates that herbivores and their gut microbes have co-evolved while adapting to their climate and botanical environment. Rare domesticated ruminants like yak, mithun and camel are adapted to hostile environment and are of economic and social significance to more remote communities that rely heavily on the productivity of these rare ruminant livestock for their wellbeing. This review presents an account of the progress that has been made in rumen microbiology research and our current understanding of the rumen microbial ecosystem and its role in improving productivity of livestock and the environment with respect to yak, mithun and camel. The amount of information on rumen microbial diversity of these animals is limited. Only recently, highthroughput techniques are being employed to understand structural and functional diversity of rumen microbes of these animals. Limited data available so far indicate that there is a substantial host specifi city in community structure of rumen microbes of these rare domesticated animals.Yak ( Bos grunniens ) and mithun ( Bos frontalis ) are found at high altitude and have a grazing habit. They usually migrat e to low altitude in search of pastures in the winter season. The scarcity of natural pasture at high altitude developed the animals to extract more nutrients from feed by increasing retention time and ability of microbes of rumen habitat for production of an array of enzymes for utilization of fi brous feeds. Camels ( Camelus dromedarius ) are adapted to extreme temperature and rely on scarce natural forages for their nutritional needs.

Despite reports of BVDV infection in several domestic and wild ruminants, no information exists for mithun (Bos frontalis) species. Hence, this study was undertaken to determine prevalence of BVDV infection in mithuns, which contribute significantly to local economy in the North Eastern region of India. Blood and serum samples were collected between 2013 and 2016 from mithuns (n = 466) belonging to the states of Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh. Serum samples were tested for BVDV antibodies by a commercial ELISA and leukocytes were tested for BVDV by real-time RT-PCR. The overall true seroprevalence rate was 13.1% (95% confidence interval, CI: 6.9-17.8%) with higher prevalence in mithuns reared under semi-intensive system (27.5%) than in free-ranging mithuns (7.6%). Among the three states, seroprevalence (16.2%) was highest in Nagaland, while prevalence rates varied markedly among geographical locations. Age-wise data showed highest seroprevalence rate in >6-year-old animals (20.6%) than 2-6 years old (16.9%), 6 months-2 years old (8.5%), and <6-month-old animals (11.3%). The seroprevalence was higher in males (20.9%) than in females (12.1%). Among the four mithun strains, higher prevalence was evident in Manipur (30.3%) than Arunachal (21.3%), Nagaland (11.7%), and Mizoram strain (10.2%). However, no BVDV genomic RNA could be detected. The results provide first serological evidence of BVDV infection in mithun species and extend the knowledge on BVDV host range. The baseline data will help further investigations on epidemiology of BVD in mithun and its impact on mithun production.
