Cellulosic fibers from the bast of Pueraria lobata (P. lobata) vine were separated using a "green" and efficient method that combined steam explosion (SE) and a laccase mediator system (LMS). The chemical components, structure, and thermal alterations in the fibers were evaluated. The SE performed at 180 °C for 10 min did not change the chemical composition of P. lobata; however, SE did alter the fiber structure and rendered its surface more accessible to the laccase enzyme. Treated and untreated samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and chemical methods. The cellulose content of the processed fibers was approximately 68.2%, and the lignin content was 11.8%, which was much lower than the 22.98% lignin content of the raw material. The cellulose fibers exhibited higher cellulose crystallinity and thermal stability compared with the untreated samples. This combined treatment approach may be useful for the isolation of cellulose fibers for composites, textiles, and other industrial applications.

RESUMONeste trabalho, foram produzidas espumas vitrocristalinas a partir de vidros de garrafas descartadas e casca de arroz (3 a 25% em massa), como agente porogênico. Diferentes composições foram preparadas de maneira a se obter materiais com porosidade controlada para aplicações, nas quais o isolamento térmico e a não-inflamabilidade são os principais requisitos técnicos. Os pós de cada matéria-prima (resíduos) foram homogeneizados e as misturas foram então prensadas uniaxialmente (20 MPa). Os compactos obtidos foram queimados em diferentes temperaturas (700 -950 o C) e tempos de patamares (30 -120 min). As matérias-primas e as espumas vitrocristalinas produzidas foram caracterizadas de acordo com suas propriedades químicas, físicas e estruturais. Os resultados mostraram que é possível produzir espumas vitrocristalinas a partir de composições otimizadas com 85% de vidros de garrafas e 15% de casca de arroz, queimadas a 900 o C por diferentes tempos. Tais espumas vitrocristalinas apresentaram porosidade variando entre 80 e 84% enquanto a condutividade térmica e a resistência mecânica à compressão variaram entre 0,068 e 0,082 W/m.K e entre 1,1 e 1,8 MPa, respectivamente. ABSTRACTVitrocrystalline foams from discarded glass bottles and rice husk (3 to 25 wt%) as pore forming agent were produced in this work. Different compositions were prepared in order to obtain materials with controlled porosity in applications where thermal insulation and non-flammability are major requirements. Well-homogenized powders of the formulated compositions were uniaxially pressed (20 MPa) and the obtained compacts fired at different temperatures (700 -950°C) and holding times (30 -120 min). Raw materials and the obtained vitrocrystalline foams were characterized according to their chemical, physical and structural properties. The results showed that it is possible to produce vitrocrystalline foams from optimized compositions containing 85% glass bottle and 15% rice husk, fired at 900 o C for different holding times. These vitrocrystalline foams presented porosity varied from 80 to 84% while the thermal conductivity and compressive strength varied between 0.068 and 0.082 W/m.K and from 1.1 to 1.8 MPa, respectively.

There are increasing demands for syngas production. Fossil-based fuels are expensive and environmentally unfriendly. Affordable, sustainable, and environmentally healthy alternatives and sustainable fuel sources are needed. This study focused on producing tor-chars from two different tropical biomasses (from Nigeria, West Africa), which were torrefied and characterized to improve their properties for potential use as sustainable feedstocks in an entrained flow gasifier for syngas production. Torrefaction temperatures of 230, 240, 250, and 270 °C and residence times of 30 and 60 min were used to torrefy sundried sorghum straw (SS) and millet straw (MS) at particle size ≤5 mm. The properties of torrefied MS and SS improved significantly due to torrefaction. The optimum conditions for pretreatment of sundried MS and SS were 240 °C and 60 min, at which increased energy density significantly compensated for the severe mass loss and significant degradation of hemicellulose and cellulose. Under these conditions, the respective mass and energy yields were 53 wt% and 75% for millet straw and 49 wt% and 75% for sorghum straw. The O:C atomic ratio decreased to 0.3 in MS tor-chars and 0.2 in SS tor-chars resulting in higher heating values of 25 MJ kg −1 and 27 MJ kg −1 , respectively. Under optimum conditions, the ash content increased by 107% to be approximately 7 wt% in MS tor-char, and by 118% to about 7 wt% in SS tor-char. These properties are promising for potential feedstocks in co-firing plants or gasification systems.
