Characterization of Integrated Optical Strain Sensors Based on Silicon Waveguides

Abstract: Microscale strain gauges are widely used in micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) to measure strains such as those induced by force, acceleration, pressure or sound. We propose all-optical strain sensors based on micro-ring resonators to be integrated with MEMS. We characterized the strain-induced shift of the resonances of such devices. Depending on the width of the waveguide and the orientation of the silicon crystal, the linear wavelength shift per applied strain varies between 0.5 and 0.75 pm/microstrain… Show more

“…(2), Δn eff is the change in the amount of the effective refractive index. The effect of change on the ring circumference still is dominant [15], and a redshift of 0.20506 nm is obtained experimentally. Only the amount of redshift of the resonant spectrum eventually appears to reduce.…”

“…Several research groups have reported sensors based on siliconintegrated optical ring resonators, such as pressure sensors [11,12] and biochemical sensors [13,14]. J. Wouter reported [15] an application of particular interest for strain measurement based on silicon waveguides. The device sensitivity reached 0.5-0.75 pm∕microstrain.…”

“…(b) The broad emission spectrum of the light source, PSD BS , allows for the detection of multiple absorption lines simultaneously with the help of the spectrometer, which sees a power spectral density of PSD SM . modulated and the matching acoustic wave is detected [35][36][37]. Popa and Udrea compared direct absorption and photo-acoustic compact spectrometers in a recent publication [38].…”

“…The feasibility of an acetone detection system using the Triplex technology, which is a Si 3 N 4 waveguide layer stack, has been qualitatively demonstrated, although no quantitative analysis has been provided [86]. Similar to VIS PICs, NIR PICs found applications outside of gas spectroscopy, such as in medical imaging, biosensors and refractive index sensing [33,36,37,87,88].…”

“…Prior to the invention of starter motor, several techniques were used to start the IC engine. They include wind-up of ropes and springs, gunpowder cylinder etc., hand driven removable crank, pulling cord which was wound on pulley etc but these techniques are really risky and inconvenient [3][4][5]. These methods are not effective and efficient because sometimes they make engine to rotate in the reverse direction also.…”
