Characterization ofListeria monocytogenesrecovered from 41 cases of sporadic listeriosis in Austria by serotyping and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis

Abstract: 41 clinical Listeria monocytogenes strains recovered from seven feto-maternal and 34 non-pregnancy associated cases of human listeriosis documented between 1997 and 2000 underwent serotyping and typing by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) applying the enzymes AscI, ApaI and SmaI. The pulsotypes of the clinical strains were compared to the pulsotypes of three L. monocytogenes strains isolated from healthy fecal carriers and nine reference strains isolated from seven outbreaks in Europe and the USA. The 41… Show more

“…In Austria, serovar 4b accounts for 63.4% of the reported human listeriosis cases (Wagner and Allerberger, 2002). This predominance of serovar 4b strains is comparable to that observed in other countries.…”

“…For instance, in a study that included 41 clinical isolates obtained from sporadic cases of listeriosis in Austria between 1997 and 2000 the workers found 37 unique pulsotypes (33). In another study the workers examined 48 clinical isolates from sporadic listeriosis cases in Belgium in 2001 and found 34 different AscI profiles and 38 different ApaI profiles, providing additional support for the hypothesis that listeriosis involves a variety of genetically distinct strains (37).…”

“…Such testing permits specific interventional measures to prevent further cases of 'food poisoning' [20,25,26]. An article on an outbreak of febrile gastro enteritis associated with yellied pork contaminated with L. monocytogenes in Austria in 2008, published in this issue of Wiener klinische Wochenschrift shows the great potential of epidemiological outbreak investiga tions in recognizing sources of infections due to L. monocytogenes and their transmission routes [27].…”
