An innovative multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate metal/metalloid contamination in the surface sediments of a coastal lagoon. The concentrations of metals/metalloids were represented as a function of geochemical characteristics of the sediments (fine fraction, concentrations of organic carbon, Ca, Al, Mn) and distances between sampling points. The concentrations of As, Cu, Zn and Pb were influenced by both geochemical and geographical distance variables, the latter representing the anthropogenic influence and the extent of transport of contaminants away from the upstream source. Enrichment of the sediment with Ba, As, Co, Cr and V was determined mainly by enrichment with Mn. The proposed approach is supplementary to the traditional utilization of enrichment factors, and is better suited for systems with anthropogenic influence.

The generation of acidic drainage has become pervasive over the years and toxic elements are released due to exposure to oxidising agents, unforeseen circumstances, and human interactions. Uncontrolled acidic mine drainage release can result in substantial ecological disruption in sensitive and productive receiving waters. This study probes the element mobility of gold tailings with regard to various zones identified, based on possible phenomena such as the natural water medium, or acidic and alkaline media using sequential extraction and multivariate analyses. Factor analysis results, coupled with mineralogy, were corroborated with acid generation potential to identify various relationships that exist and establish the efficacy of the research towards predicting acid mine drainage generation potential. The statistical analysis was able to establish that pH or acidity, Fe ions, Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ played a major role in the released metals. Out of the four factors (80.8% accounted for) identified in factor analysis results for water fraction (WF), Fe contributed to three factors which showed the presence of Fe ions (assuming Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ ) responsible for the increased acidity of the tailings. The net acid producing potential and cumulative net acid producing potential showed that overall; the tailings would generate acidity due to the high presence of leachable sulphides. The trends observed in the carbonate phase indicated that despite the posit of acidity, the tailings contain a considerable amount of neutralising agent to serve as a buffer.

Numerical models are key tools to characterize hydrodynamical patterns of coastal environments and anticipate the potential effects of hazardous and extreme events, anthropogenic intervention or climate change. In this work, the openTELEMAC-MASCARET modelling system was selected to represent the dynamics of the Minho estuary, a very shallow estuary located at the Northwestern Iberian Peninsula coast. Calibration and validation results confirm the accuracy of the numerical tool, with small root mean square errors, close to null bias and the close to unit correlation and skill coefficients obtained for water level and currents velocity at several estuarine locations. The obtained results depict a tide dominated estuary with a delay in the tide phase and a marked asymmetry in the tide curve that increases upriver. Additionally, an upstream diminution of M2 and an upstream augmentation of M4 was observed, classifying this estuary as flood-dominated. The represented current patterns show that variations in the intensities of the main driving forces alter the behaviour of the hydrodynamical patterns within the estuary, with a clear dependence on bathymetric and topographic characteristics. During flood events, larger estuarine regions become submerged due to the low margins and the wetland characteristics, highlighting the need for accurate numerical models that can be used as a decision-making support tool for effective and integrated estuarine management.
