Characterization of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) beta-defensin 1: implications for its role in inflammation control

Abstract: Considering that fish grows in a complex aquatic environment, there is an increasing interest in fish β-defensins, which is an important group of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). In this study, grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) β-defensin 1 (gcdefb1) was isolated using homology cloning technology. Tissue distribution assay showed that gcdefb1 transcripts were expressed with the highest levels in brain and liver, followed by some mucous tissues. To examine gcDefb1 bioactivities, the recombinant gcDefb1 protein… Show more

“…Yang et al, 2017), so that, it is speculated that the upregulation of the intestinal def gene expression in the present study has been a response to potential intestinal dysbiosis, as stated for the intestinal lys expression. Moreover, defensins have anti‐inflammatory roles in fish (K. Yang et al, 2019), thus, the upregulation of def gene in the MPVC/Cu‐exposed fish may be a defensive response against the toxicant‐induced inflammation (evidenced by upregulation in cyp1a1 and hsp70 gene expressions).…”

“…Fish β-defensins have been reported to show anti-Gram negative bacterial activity [ 12 , 13 , 18 , 53 ], anti-Gram-positive bacterial activity [ 8 , 14 , 15 , 71 ], anti-viral activity [ 16 18 , 72 ], immunomodulatory and chemotactic responses [ 12 , 14 , 15 , 73 ], and anti-inflammatory roles [ 74 ]. Besides the afore-mentioned bioactivities, On -Def is also predicted to have anti-fungal and anti-cancer property.…”

“…The expression of the Moronecidin gene was detected in various parts of the fish including the gill, skin, intestine, spleen, anterior kidney, and blood cells using kinetic reverse transcription (RT)-PCR [ 77 ]. In grass carp, the β-defensin gene was highly expressed in the brain and liver, possibly for the regulation of immune response and inflammation within these tissues [ 170 ]. The β-defensin gene of Atlantic cod also showed increased expression in the swim bladder and peritoneum wall [ 171 ].…”
