Characterization of Gosa Municipal Solid Wastes at Abuja, Nigeria

Abstract: The study examined municipal solid wastes characteristics of Gosa dumpsite at Abuja, Nigeria. Waste characterization has not yet been given adequate attention in management of waste in Nigeria and it is a major problem that affects waste materials handling and recovery processes. Wastes samples from Gosa waste dump site, Abuja, were randomly collected and subjected to moisture content, composition, density and size distribution determinations according to prescribed standards in literature. The moisture conten… Show more

“…The implication of this finding is that majority of the Cr, Ni and Pb tolerant-bacteria were predominantly distributed in soil samples from Gosa and Gwagwalada dumpiste, probably due to the huge volumes of solid wastes disposed at these locations over the years. According to previous studies Gosa and Gwagwalada dumpsites are the most famous and voluminous solid waste dumping site due to their strategic locations to municipal, industrial and commercial waste generation centers (Sawyerr et al, 2017;Ojiego et al, 2019;Saidu et al, 2021). The dumpsites are used by farmers for planting mostly vegetables and maize and thus, identification of the metal tolerant bacteria will be significant in proper bioremediation of the heavy metals at the sites by the bacterial agents.…”

“…Abuja which principally constitutes the Abuja Municipal Area Council has a central government institution responsible for solid waste management in the City known as the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) with a statutory mandate covering city cleaning, street sweeping, litter control, solid waste collection and transfer and vegetation control. The F.C.T has waste dumpsites located in all the area councils including those located at Mpape, Gosa, Ajata, Karshi and Kubwa to serve the municipal area [9].…”

“…By 2050, there will be 3.4 billion metric tons of municipal solid waste produced worldwide, an increase of around 70%. Numerous factors, such as changing consumer purchasing habits, population growth, urbanization, and economic expansion, are to blame for this (Abumere and Filani, 1986;Bamgboye & Ojolo, 2004;Imoh & Emmanuel, 2011;Ian Tiseo, 2021). Globally, both rural and urban dwellers generate millions of tons of waste yearly, this portends a grave challenge to everyone (ChineduIke et al, 2018).…”
