Characterization of excavated claystone and claystone–bentonite mixtures as backfill/seal material

Abstract: Crushed claystone produced by excavation of repository openings has been investigated as backfill/seal material. The raw coarse-grained claystone can be used for backfilling repository openings and, in mixture with bentonite, for sealing boreholes, drifts and shafts. The investigation programme focused on characterizing the thermo-hydro-mechanical properties of the excavated Callovo-Oxfordian claystone and the compacted claystone-bentonite mixtures, including (1) mechanical compaction, (2) gas and water permea… Show more

“…It was also reported by Arifin and Schanz [7] that pores in dry conditions are large, while micropores are dominant at wet conditions when the samples are at the same density or void ratio. In this claystone-bentonite mixture, the claystone macropores were filled with bentonite [21]. When interacting with water, the bentonite expanded and closed these macropores.…”

“…Zang [21] compacted claystone mixed with bentonite in a different composition. The findings demonstrated that the macropores in the claystone aggregate could be more densely filled with bentonite powder, leading to a low porosity.…”

“…Claystone is a material usually avoided and discarded due to its unfavourable behaviour and the existence of its layers considered to be a problem in construction work have been reported in some publications [1][2][3][4][5]. The use of this material has, however, been widely recommended, especially as a barrier to hazardous waste and this requires mixing it with bentonite to improve its hydro-mechanical properties [6][7][8][9]. Zang and Kröhn [9] reported the superiority of the claystone-bentonite mixture's hydromechanical properties compared to compacted pure bentonite and bentonite-sand mixture which included higher density, stiffness, and stability, and very low permeability as well as its ability to release gas at lower pressure [9].…”
