Characterization of Ethiopian Wheat Germplasm for Resistance to Four Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici Races Facilitated by Single-Race Nurseries

Abstract: In Ethiopia, breeding rust resistant wheat cultivars is a priority for wheat production. A stem rust epidemic during 2013 to 2014 on previously resistant cultivar Digalu highlighted the need to determine the effectiveness of wheat lines to multiple races of Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici in Ethiopia. During 2014 and 2015, we evaluated a total of 97 bread wheat and 14 durum wheat genotypes against four P. graminis f. sp. tritici races at the seedling stage and in single-race field nurseries. Resistance genes … Show more

“…The durum genotypes were all resistant to race TRTTF. In contrast to TRTTF, race JRCQC that is adapted to durum wheat (Hundie et al, 2019) in Ethiopia was the most virulent race on the durum genotypes in our study. This suggests that Sr genes/alleles effective to races TTKSK, TTKST, TTKTT, TKTTF, and TRTTF do not provide resistance to JRCQC.…”

“…Five seedlings per line were planted per replicate for all six Pgt races. The inoculum preparation, inoculation, greenhouse conditions, and disease screening were as described by Hundie et al (2019). In brief, the urediniospores stored at -80 • C were heat shocked at 45 • C for 15 min.…”

“…The races were evaluated in a greenhouse for seedling responses at the USDA‐ARS Cereal Disease Laboratory, St. Paul, MN according to methods described by Hundie et al. (2019). Race TTKSK was screened both in the greenhouse under a normal temperature (19–22 °C), and a cold temperature regime (15 °C to 18 °C, night/day, with a 16 h photoperiod) in a growth chamber.…”

“…In a 2‐yr field study with the Ug99 group race PTKST, mean yield loss of the susceptible check cultivar was 47.9%, while mean yield loss of Kingbird was 10.1% (Soko, Bender, Prins, & Pretorius, 2018). Kingbird's field performance in Ethiopia against races TTKSK, TKTTF, TRTTF, and JRCQC was very good, with stem rust severities ranging from trace to 15% (Borlaug Global Rust Initiative, 2019; Hundie et al., 2019). We report here the release of three hard white winter wheat germplasm lines, KS14U6380R5 (Reg.…”
