Characterization of Enhanced ITZ in Engineered Polypropylene Fibers for Bond Improvement

Abstract: The interfacial transition zone (ITZ) is well known to be a zone of high porosity and lesser strength and is the weak zone in the fiber-reinforced matrix. This study aims to evaluate the improvement in the bonding between engineered polypropylene fibers and the surrounding mortar matrix. The improvement was implemented by modifying the ITZ, which develops between the fibers and the cementitious matrix. Two commercially available repair materials have been used in this study, Mix M and Mix P. Mix M served as th… Show more

“…The results for slant shear bond and splitting tensile bond tests are adopted from a previous study [31] conducted by the authors. More information about the properties such as freeze-thaw, cyclic loading, and corrosion resistance of the repair materials can be found in Wang et al [31,32,38] and Bajaj et al [39]. However, due to the proprietary nature of the repairs, the detailed information about materials' constituents is not available.…”

“…Using nano particles to coat fibers will also increases the final cost of fiber production [26]. As a result, fiber coating with low-cost environmentally friendly SCM can be considered to be a sustainable method to improve ITZ and to the best knowledge of authors, few studies with limited fiber and SCM type have been investigated so far [27]. In this study, two novel methods were proposed to coat PP and CF fibers in to improve the mechanical behavior and enhance the ITZ.…”
