Characterization of Electroslag Remelted Super Hard High Speed Tool Steel Containing Niobium

Abstract: In this work, thermodynamical equilibria have been calculated for super hard high speed tool steel (HSS), AISI M41 composition belonging to the multicomponent system Fe-C-Cr-W-Mo-V-Co as well as for its three different variant containing niobium. Some temperature-concentration diagram for both class of alloys are presented and calculated quantities (melting and transformations, amount and composition of phases) are compared with experimental data. Effect of niobium and high cooling rate during electroslag reme… Show more

“…Electroslag remelting (ESR) process is a promising method for the production of high-quality ingots because non-metallic inclusions can be removed efficiently and sounder structure can be obtained during the fabrication of ingots. [1][2][3][4][5] Thus, it is vitally necessary that ESR process is used during the refining process of the special alloys.…”

“…To settle the problem of nonmetallic inclusions damaging the mechanical properties of steels, electroslag remelting (ESR) technology [1][2][3][4][5][6] was developed for its excellent purification efficiency. Nowadays, the ESR process has become more and more important for the increasingly high requirements of the steels in areas such as electricity, aviation, metallurgy, machinery and so on.…”

“…The data for all edge binaries with Fe and C, Fe-M, and C-M, as well as for ternaries Fe-C-M (M = metal), are contained in the optimized TCFE database, together with data for other edge binaries and higher-order systems (M1-M2, M1-M2-C, M1-M2-Fe.). All phases in the database are described according to a sub-lattice model [9,10]. Phases other than those in Table 1 have not been considered as possible stable phases in the calculations performed here, since they have not been reported in real high-speed-steel alloys.…”
