Characterization of Chain Molecular Assemblies in Long-Chain, Layered Silver Thiolates:  A Joint Infrared Spectroscopy and X-ray Diffraction Study

Abstract: The first direct characterization of structures of bi-molecular chain assemblies in a self-consistent series of pillared, layered organic-inorganic long-chain silver (n-alkane) thiolates, (AgS(CH 2 ) n CH 3 ; n ) 5, 6, 9, 11, 15, and 17), is reported using the combined application of infrared transmission spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. The structural attributes elucidated include quantitative estimates of average chain orientation, chain conformation, chain-chain translational order, interpenetrat… Show more

“…Affinity of Ag + for selenol groups is comparable [40], but these moieties are relatively rare in the living world. Furthermore, silver can act as a bridging agent between several thiols, forming chains that could lead to the irreversible aggregation of the thiol-bearing molecules [41]. As thus, Ag (+1) species can cause the inactivation of biological systems bearing these moieties by forming irreversible adduct with them.…”

“…Both profiles are characterized by a progression of intense reflections that can be attributed to the formation of a layered structure. [27][28][29][30][31][32] Schematic diagrams of the layered structures of Ag-4ABT and Ag-4MABT salts are shown in Figs. 1(c) and (d), respectively.…”

“…The metal and sulfur atoms are arranged in a two-dimensional zigzag plane, with the thiol chains lying perpendicularly to both sides of the plane as extensively reported in the previous literature. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] The system is stabilized through the socalled metallophilic attractions. 12,13 These M I -M I noncovalent interactions are estimated to be energetically similar to hydrogen bonds in the case of gold(I) (5-10 kcal mol 21 ) and slightly weaker in the case of other metals like silver(I) and copper(I).…”
