A nano-magnetic catalyst CaO/NaY-Fe 3 O 4 was synthesized and used as a catalyst for biodiesel production from canola oil. The structure of the synthesized catalysts was characterized using several methods such as XRD, FESEM, BET, FT-IR and VSM. In order to optimize the influence of the operating variables, such as methanol to canola oil molar ratio, the amount of catalyst and reaction time on the yield of transesterification reaction, an experimental design was applied based on the Box-Behnken method. The optimum values of these variables were predicted by the Cubic model. Maximum amount of methyl esters (95.37%) was achieved under the optimum operating conditions and it was in excellent agreement with the experimental result within an error less than 5%.

The poultry waste of egg shells was cleaned and finely powdered which was subsequently modified with in situ generated copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and cuprous oxide nanoparticles (Cu 2 ONPs) by one step hydrothermal method. The modified egg shell powder (MESP) was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and antibacterial tests. The MESP had in situ generated spherical CuNPs and Cu 2 ONPs in the size range of 50 nm to 120 nm. The spectral analysis indicated lowering of intensity of the peaks of MESP indicating the involvement of the functional groups of the protein component of ESP in the generation and stabilization of the nanoparticles. X-ray analysis indicated the generation of both CuNPs and Cu 2 ONPs in MSEP. The thermal analysis indicated lowering of the thermal stability for MESP. The MESP exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against both the Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. Hence the low cost MESP with in situ generated CuNPs and Cu 2 ONPs can be used as antibacterial cleaning powder for houseware and also as antibacterial filler in the preparation of polymer composites.

Modelling clay materials used in artworks: an infrared spectroscopic investigation

Modelling clays are utilised by artists for their malleable properties. One of the challenges in managing collections containing such materials is the variety of commercial compositions available and, therefore, the variation in the requirements for storage and maintenance of such artefacts. The Art Gallery of New South Wales in Australia is responsible for the care of a range of artworks that contain modelling materials, some of which show detrimental property changes and there is concern for the longevity of such works. The aim of the current research is to determine the compositions of the modelling materials utilised in works produced by different artists in the gallery's collection. Infrared spectroscopy was used to identify the main constituents of samples collected from the works of four different artists and a variety of material types were determined. Oil-based, air-hardening and polymer clays of varying composition were identified in the survey of artworks. Signs of deterioration in particular artworks were able to be characterised using spectroscopy, with the mechanisms identified including loss and oxidation of the oil component. Where a polymer clay was chosen by one artist, the distortion of the artwork was due to flow of the material over time and demonstrates the need for an understanding of the long term properties of the materials being used. The study has highlighted the need for conservators to have a detailed understanding of modelling materials to ensure the longevity of artworks containing this class of materials.
