Characterization of bovine viral diarrhea virus proteins

Abstract: Virus-specific proteins were examined in cultured cells infected with bovine viral diarrhea virus. By using antisera obtained from virus-infected animals, three major virus-specific polypeptides with molecular weights of 115,000 (115K), 80K, and 55K were observed. Minor proteins of 45,000 and 38,000 daltons were also noted. Tryptic peptide mapping indicated that the 115K and the 80K polypeptides were structurally related. The 55K protein was glycosylated and appeared not to be related to the 115K and 80K prote… Show more

“…While this protein apparently remains unchanged after infections with nonopBVDV, processing of p125 has been observed in cells infected with cpBVDV strains . A cleavage product of about 80 kDa (p80) has been described as a marker for the cytopathogenic viruses (Purchio et al ., 1984 ;Donis and Dubovi, 1 987a,b) . Using a monospecific antiserum the second processing product of 54 kDa (p54) could be detected in cells infected with BVDV NADL (Collett et al ., 1988b) .…”

“…The 55K virion glycoprotein is presumably synthesized on membrane-bound polyribosomes. Our inability to detect virionspecific proteins programmed by membrane-bound polyribosomes could be due to the fact that our antisera, obtained from a BVDV-infected calf (10), may recognize only the native, properly glycolysated protein; proper glycolysation may not occur in vitro. Attempts to produce antibodies against the denatured 55K protein are in progress.…”

“…results in the appearance of a single virusspecific RNA species of 8.2 kilobases (kb) (9). Three major virus-specific proteins have been detected in these cells by immunoprecipitation with antisera generated against BVDV in infected calves (10). These proteins have molecular weights of 115,000 (115K), 80K, and 55K.…”
