Characterization of Biobased Alginate/Glycerol/ Sunflower Oil as Biodegradable Packaging

Abstract: The most used packaging material was plastic, but can cause environmental problems because it was not easily degraded. Therefore, it was necessary to look for alternative packaging materials that are easily biodegraded including edible film. The main raw materials for edible films were alginates and plasticizers including glycerol and sunflower oil. The objective of this study was to determine the characteristics of edible film composed of alginate, glycerol and sunflower oil. The study was carried out through… Show more

“…The weight loss of uncoated guava was 77.87 %, which was higher than that of the guava coated with levan film containing 2 or 3 % (w / v) sodium alginate. (Hajji et al, 2018;Dewi and Husni, 2020). Conversely, the weight loss of the guava coated with purified levan film containing 3 % (w / v) sodium alginate was 74.80 % and not significant when compared with that of the uncoated guava (p > 0.05).…”

“…Alginate is a hydrophilic compound that retains little moisture. When alginate concentration increases, the water vapor transmission rate also increases (Dewi and Husni, 2020). However, the edible film with purified levan containing 3 % (w / v) sodium alginate demonstrated the lowest WVP at 2.84 × 10 −8 g m −1 s −1 Pa −1 .…”
