Characterization of Mycobacterium avium complex related mycobacteria isolated from an African environment and patients with AIDS

Abstract: SummaryThirteen isolates from African AIDS patients and from the environment in Zaire were identified as members of the Mycobacterium avium complex by phenotypic tests. RFLP analysis showed that the isolates belong to a genetically homogeneous cluster. The 16S rRNA sequence analysis suggests a close relationship with the P-49 strain (ATCC 35847), a reference strain for the serotype 7 of M. avium complex. This work shows the close relationship between certain M. avium complex strains responsible for disseminate… Show more

“…Identification at the species level was made by conventional tests (38). M. avium and M. intracellulare were identified according to the 16S rRNA signature sequence as previously described (9). For M. intracellulare, M. marinum, M. kansasii, M. fortuitum, and M. vaccae, only single isolates were employed.…”

“…Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb-1) and four M. avium clinical strains (Mav-2-5) were isolated in the Institute for Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases in Warsaw, Poland (the Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory). M. avium isolates were identified on the basis of their 16SrRNA analysis sequences (25) and by serotyping (46). In addition, M. tuberculosis H37Rv (NCTC 7416) and M. bovis BCG (Brasiliane strain) were included in the study.…”

“…avium isolates from European human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients were predominantly the A-type (Hampson et al 1989;Portaels et al 1990;McFadden et al 1992;Visuvanathan et al 1992;De Smet et al 1996). not M. avium), reacted with the MAC AccuProbe, and failed to react with either the M. avium-or M. intracellularespecific probes (Fonteyne et al 1997). Members of pMB22-RFLP type H were homogeneous, failed to grow at 45°C (i.e.…”
