“…In the streptococci, this 3-kbp region contains a homolog of an ABC transporter of unknown function and mefA, a gene that, unlike the erm gene, confers resistance to macrolides but not to streptogramins and lincosamides. A 2-kb region immediately downstream of the ermG gene in CTnGERM1 contained sequences that had been found previously on a Staphylococcus aureus ermB-containing plasmid (6). Other sequences in the downstream region included a homolog of a Bacteroides fragilis IS element (17).…”

“…The DNA was digested with SmaI and subjected to pulsed-field gel electrophoresis as described previously (Fig. 1) (13). Concatameric bacteriophage lambda DNA molecules (48.5 kb; Bio-Rad) and the SmaI fragments of the cellular DNA from S. aureus NCTC 8325 were used as size standards.…”

“…The sat4 gene encoding streptothricin (nourseothricin) resistance has first been described in Campylobacter coli (Jacob et al, 1994;Bischoff and Jacob 1996). In staphylococci the aadE-sat4-aphA gene cluster is flanked by two copies of IS1182 constituting transposon Tn5405 (Derbise et al, 1996;Derbise et al, 1997). The aadE-sat4-aphA gene cluster is widespread among many Gram-positive genera and it remains to be speculative where this gene clusters originates from and subsequently spread to other bacteria.…”
