Characterization of antigen processing machinery and Survivin expression in tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: BACKGROUND There is a statistically significant association between human leukocyte antigen (HLA) Class I antigen expression and improved prognosis for some patients. This association reflects the control of tumor growth by HLA Class I antigen‐restricted, tumor‐associated antigen‐specific cytolytic T cells. However, progression of other malignant diseases is not associated with the loss of HLA expression. These observations show that the poor prognosis of a subset of tumors, despite high HLA Class I antigen ex… Show more

“…Currently, several clinical trials targeting survivin with various approaches ranging from immunotherapy to antagonists are under way and might be broadly applicable to different tumours (Altieri, 2006). High levels of cytoplasmic survivin expression have been reported previously in OSCC (Weinman et al, 2003) with similar staining patterns as shown in our study in which 58% of all tumours prominently expressed survivin in the cytoplasm. Here, we found a significantly inverse correlation between cytoplasmic survivin expression and HPV-associated carcinomas.…”

“…In a recent paper about survivin, 37% of TC was highly expressed and was associated with tumor progression. 35 However, the present study revealed a higher frequency (71.2%) of survivin expression and that the overexpression of survivin was not significant by any parameters.…”

“…Lastly, the frequency of tapasin down-regulation in laryngeal SCC lesions is markedly higher than that in maxillary sinus SCC (11) and tonsillar carcinoma lesions (38), and is markedly lower than that in colorectal carcinoma (35) and renal cell carcinoma (36) lesions. Whether the differences we have indicated reflect differences in the extent of genetic instability and selective pressure on tumor cell populations in various types of malignancies, in the clinical characteristics of the patients investigated, in the histopathologic characteristics of the lesions analyzed, and/or in the sensitivity of the immunohistochemical technique used remains to be determined.…”
