Characterization of an atypical NOR site polymorphism in brown trout (Salmo trutta) with Ag- and CMA3-staining, and fluorescent in situ hybridization

Abstract: We have analyzed by Ag- and CMA3-staining, and rDNA fluorescent in situ hybridization an unusual NOR site polymorphism in a population of Salmo trutta from Miño basin (Northwestern Spain). A multichromosomal Ag-NOR distribution largely different from standard individuals both in the number and position of Ag-NORs, as well as in the pattern of activity, was revealed. Atypical Ag-NORs consist of rDNA genes, as evidenced by rDNA FISH, and are capable of constituting their own nucleolus. In spite of the large numb… Show more

“…1, 2 and 4). This is in accordance with numerous reports about the findings of polymorphism of NOR in Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae (Foresti et al 1989), Aphanius fasciatus (Vitturi et al 1995), Leporinus friderici (Galetti et al 1995), Salmo trutta (Castro et al 1996), Salvelinus alpines (Reed and Phillips 1997), Chondrostoma lusitanicum (Rodrigues andCollaresPereira 1996, Collares-Pereira andRáb 1999), Hoplias malabaricus (Born and Bertollo 2000), Oedalechilus labeo (Rossi et al 2000), Astyanax scabripinnis (Mantovani et al 2000, Marco-Ferro et al 2001, Soza et al 2001, A. altiparanae (Pacheco et al 2001, Mantovani et al 2005 (Vitturi et al 2005), Prochilodus lineatus (Gras et al 2007), and B. aff. iheringii (Capistano et al 2008).…”

“…Coupled with chromosomal rearrangements, transposition events have also been considered responsible for the NOR dispersal in genomes of different groups (Castro et al 1996, Almeida-Toledo et al 1996. So far, both 5S or 18S ribosomal genes have never been identified on the B-microchromosomes of P. lineatus (Jesus and Moreira-Filho 2003), as also shown in the present data.…”

“…Heteromorphic NORs detected in P. squamosissimus suggest that such phenotypes may be valuable for genetical recognition of different populations in the central Amazon. Variations in copy number and site distribution of rDNA clusters/NORs have been described extensively in fish species, and have allowed the characterization of intraspecific stocks or populations in some fish groups (Phyllips et al, 1988;Castro et al, 1996), but to our knowledge the present study is the first to show this situation in Neotropical Perciformes.…”
